An Idea For A Story, PLEASE GIVE INPUT
Okay, I posted this on Facebook and Twitter, but there’s actually more room to go into detail about it here, so I’m gonna ask that you guys give me some input and your own thoughts as to whether an idea I have for a story sounds solid or not. It’s one that’s been bouncing around in my head for the past year, but for various reasons, including my lackluster history with my own created characters and stories outside of fanfiction, I’ve kinda been arguing back and forth with myself if it sounds good or stupid and if I should bother trying to do anything with it. So far, anyone I’ve asked about it has given positive responses, but I’d just like to ask more people about it.
Here’s what I’ve got so far: The world is populated by anthropomorphic creatures (think Sonic/Star Fox/Bucky O’Hare/etc.). It’s made up of various nations that range from predominantly one race of said anthropomorphics to being a melting pot of various creatures. With that said, there’s a bit of a class system in place nonetheless, with the Simians being considered among the more intelligent in that they were able to create more advanced technology. But all of that changed when they tried to create a cure for a disease outbreak…and ended up making it worse, creating large, bulky monstrosities with less (or in some cases zero) fur, lacking basic intelligence, and basically becoming the equivalent of zombies on steroids. The working term I have for them now is the Hairless…because, as you know, I’m a big Kingdom Hearts fan. lol
What’s worse is that this condition could be spread via exchange of bodily fluids. In other words, getting bitten by one and having their saliva enter your bloodstream, or perhaps getting their blood into an open wound, and you will become one. So now the world has become a bit overrun by these monsters, and the people left are having to rework their cities a bit to keep them out as best as they could. Unfortunately, they’re still having to send parties out for recon, the collection of resources, and other reasons, meaning they’d have to be armed and trained to deal with these creatures if necessary. Meanwhile, most of the major governments have lost their leaders, and those trying to pick up the slack have their own varying ideas on what to do with the current situation, ranging from “Let’s dedicate as much of our efforts to slaying the Hairless” to “We should hold defenses and keep them out to eventually starve themselves” to “Let’s put all the blame on the Simians and let them clean up their own mess”. Needless to say, there’s a massive political mess at the moment.
So, yeah, it’s basically Sonic the Hedgehog meets The Last Of Us meets Attack On Titan, with even a little Game of Thrones-esque politics thrown in for flavour. Let me know what you think of this idea in the comments section below, if it sounds like a solid idea for story, as well as anything you personally would add/subtract to what I’ve got so far. Ja né!
Jyger’s Rant – Freedom Planet Review
So, you know how fans have complained for years and years about how the Sonic games have lacked a lot of what made them great back in the old Genesis days? And, you know, there’s a reason for that, and why 2D Sonic platformers nowadays, while I wouldn’t necessarily call them bad, have ultimately failed to capture that same feel: The people who developed the old Sega Genesis Sonic games don’t work at Sega anymore. It’s that simple. The developers at Sega don’t know how to make a Sonic the Hedgehog game that the hardcore fans (and, let’s face it, they are LEGION) have demanded for going-on-decades now. Mind you, I wasn’t among the fans that were complaining about the 3D Sonic games and begging for more 2D Sonic games… … …Then we had atrocities like Sonic The Hedgehog for the X-Box 360 and Playstation 3, we saw Sonic The Hedgehog 4 ultimately disappoint, and now we’ve got the Sonic Boom spin-off series that seems to have finally caused the fanbase to go completely insane, and at that point, even I couldn’t, in sound mind and judgment, like where the franchise was going. And if Sega can’t give us good Sonic games, we’re just gonna have to look elsewhere. The only problem is, where are we ever going to find a good Sonic-esque game being made nowa-
… … …HO. LY. SHIT! XD
Okay, real talk, I’ve actually been following Freedom Planet for some time now, ever since Liam and Woolie did a Let’s Play of the game a few months ago (so, thank you, Super Best Friends, for introducing me to this game), but I wanted to hold off on giving my opinions on it until I’d sat down and played it. As such, I had to wait until it was available on Wii U, which only happened the other day when I wasn’t paying attention. 😛 Also, despite the fact that it was originally thought up by the creators, GalaxyTrail, as a Sonic fan-game, it’s not EXACTLY the same. A number of people have brought up how the game looks and feels like if the video game developers, Treasure (developers of such games as Gunstar Heroes, Wario World, Mischief Makers, and Sin & Punishment), had obtained the rights to Sonic and made a game for the series. As such, it comes off both as a tribute to the Genesis Sonic games and a lot of other 2D platformers of that time trying to cash in on Sonic’s popularity, while also having its own unique identity.
The story of the game (which, FYI, you can pass over all of the cutscenes by playing the game in Classic Mode as opposed to Story Mode) stars Sash Lilac, a water dragon, and Carol Tea, a wildcat, as they find themselves in the middle of a conflict with an intergalactic warlord named Arktivus Brevon. Brevon, having crash-landed on their planet, seeks to leave by using the power of an ancient artifact called the Kingdom Stone. However, the Kingdom Stone is the world’s primary source of energy, and to obtain it, he sets a series of events into motion to force the three major nations of the world into conflict so that he can take the stone in the confusion. I won’t spoil the entire story, and a lot of the details can seem a bit glanced over at times, but let’s just say that a lot of the story focuses on trying to get the three nations to work together to stop Brevon, and on the friendship of the main characters.
One thing I think this game does smartly is that it introduces the idea of multiple playable characters with radically different styles of gameplay right away, and doesn’t have a single character get top billing. Sure, one can make the argument that Lilac is the main protagonist, since a lot of the story’s more epic moments occur around her (and, in early development, she was a hedgehog…and it shows, lol), but Carol is most definitely not left out of the fun. Let’s be honest: A big part of the reason people complain about other playable characters in the Sonic games is because the game is called Sonic The Hedgehog. It’s got nothing to do with if these characters are good or not (and, a lot of times, I actually rather like the side-characters in Sonic), or if they add anything fun or unique to the gameplay, it’s about how the game is supposed to be about Sonic. Here, we don’t have that problem. Lilac, even if she IS the main protagonist, does not do everything herself. Even when playing as her, there are points in the game where her friends will pop in to lend a hand, such as during a running boss fight where Carol rides her motorcycle (which is badass, btw) and does occasional attacks to the boss while your other friends drop items.
As for the gameplay itself, like I said, Lilac mostly plays like Sonic, but with other abilities tacked on, although these abilities are oftentimes required to survive. Her Dragon Boost allows her to rocket through the air in different directions, and she can use her hair to whip enemies and do a spinning double jump. Carol can scratch and pounce on foes, do wall jumps, and kick at lightning speed. The last playable character (and only in Classic Mode), Milla Basset, can do flutter jumps, dig through the dirt, pick up items, and produce energy fields that form shields, lasers, and blocks. I’ve heard that they plan to add more playable characters later on, but for now, these three are all cool, despite the lack of a Milla campaign taking place in the actual Story Mode. There’s also different difficulty levels: Casual, Easy, Normal, and Hard. Naturally, because I kinda suck at the old school Sonic games, I opted to go with Casual, just to start myself off. And frankly, I like that there’s a Casual Mode for guys like me to start off with and gradually grow in skill.
So yeah, if you’ve been missing games like the classic Sonic The Hedgehog games, Rocket Knight Adventures, Ristar, and so on, go and get Freedom Planet. It’s currently available on Wii U and Steam for less than 20 bucks, so as long as you have the means to pay for it, there’s no reason you can’t get it. And hey, when you do, feel free to come back here and lemme know what you thought of the game. Also, be sure to check out the designer of the main protagonists, Ziyo Ling, and her work. Ja né!
Jyger’s Favourite 5 – 5 Games I’d Love To See Makers For
So, as anyone who follows me on Facebook and/or Twitter can gather, I have a copy of Super Mario Maker. And, suffice to say, I LOVE THIS FREAKING GAME! XD However, as I know for a fact people have already realized (because I’ve seen videos akin to this article that I am currently writing), there will most likely be copycats. In other words, expect there to be Maker games for other series. However, in this case, I say “By all means!”. The only thing I ask is that these aren’t just pushed outta people’s asses, and have the same level of care put into them as Super Mario Maker. Otherwise, what’s the point? But yeah, as long as this is likely going to be a thing that’ll happen, here’re some games I’d love to see makers for.
Probably the most “DUH” worthy titles, hence why I’m putting them together. Why “DUH”? Well, because they’re both platformers, like Mario, but have their own unique flavours to them as well, and have highly dedicated fan bases. But, I think the biggest reason is a simple fact that is all too clear to said fan bases: No one at Capcom or Sega either care to or know how to make a good Mega Man or Sonic game anymore. That’s a fact that’s become blatantly clear over the past few years. And if we can’t count on them, then this is the logical conclusion, unless they want more indy titles like Mighty no.9 and Freedom Planet to steal their spotlight. And hey, Mega Man actually DID do a level creator once for a PSP title that worked out decently, so they’ve already got a system for it that they can tweak.
No, not making individual Pokémon, just making Pokémon games. That might be going a tad bit too far. But yeah, being able to make your own region with your own Trainers, Gyms, Elite 4, caves to explore, cities to visit, etc. I’d also include a means by which to have your maps and battles be shown in either the original Red and Blue graphics or in the new-school X & Y 3D graphics. Of course, like the standard Pokémon game only having a single save file, you should only be able to make the one Pokémon game.
Much like Mega Man and Sonic, this is another “DUH!” title, but for different reasons. Specifically, though, since Nintendo has now done a Mario Maker, Zelda would be the next logical choice. Obviously, this would have to be the top-down games, but I would advise making options to do them in the style of the original Legend of Zelda game, A Link To The Past, the Oracle games, Minish Cap, and A Link Between Worlds.
Yes, I know, RPG Maker. As someone who has used them, I can tell you that, as cool as they are, having an official game that’s more user friendly and available to more people in an official capacity would be great, and really, either one of these titles would be great. Maybe even both as a package deal. Hell, maybe even include sprites for other Square-Enix games like Chrono Trigger, Legend of Dragoon, or Kingdom Hearts for fans of those games, as a sort of Square-Enix RPG all-stars type deal.
Again, now that we’ve done a Maker game for Mario, let’s get the other major Nintendo titles Maker games. And really, who wouldn’t salivate at the idea of making their own Metroid stages and games? Especially because it would take us back to the days where Samus rarely said a word and mostly just kicked who knows how many billion types of ass? lol I’m thinking the styles present could be the original NES version, the Game Boy version, SNES version, and the GBA version.
Anyway, those are my picks for future Maker games. Got one that’s not on here? Leave it in the comments, and we’ll see what the future has in store for us all. Ja né!
Things I’d Like To See In Future Sonic Games
So I’m on kind of a Sonic the Hedgehog kick right now, in fact actually contemplating writing a couple of chapters of my old fanfic Sonic 5D’s. But I thought to myself recently, what would I like to see in some future Sonic games? So I thought I’d compile a short list, just for the heck of it. They are…
One of the few things I saw in Sonic X that I thought was frigging awesome was when Sonic transformed into his Dark mode. Considering that the games have taken things from the show and made them canon in the games (Shadow’s wrist rings being power inhibitors, for example), this would actually be a really awesome thing to include for a game.
Yeah, I know, a lot of people didn’t really like Shadow the Hedgehog‘s solo title, and the next time he was playable in a console game turned out BAD, but I’d still like to go back and revisit the rivalry between him and Sonic, even if it is more friendly now than anything.
No, really. Sonic ’06 may have been a colossal failure, but dammit, Mephiles was frigging awesome. He was evil to the core, he was a master manipulator, and he was legitimately threatening and scary (Dan Green gave him the ultimate evil laugh, in my opinion). Plus, of all the villains in these games, he actually succeeded in killing Sonic, even if it was only temporary. Doctor Eggman in all of these games has yet to accomplish that much. Granted, bringing Mephiles back would be tricky at best, but I’m sure there’s some way it could be pulled off.

#4 – A Sonic Journey to the West game (Yes, I know that’s the cover to Sonic Universe #16, it was the closest I could find, lol)
This just seems like the most obvious next choice in the storybook titles, should they ever decide to do another one. I mean, Sonic is already based off of Journey to the West, so why not?
Yes, I know, he’s a blatant ripoff of Gogeta, but I don’t care. Hyper Shadic was frigging AMAZING in Nazo Unleashed, and his popularity is pretty much a proven fact with all the character mods that exist for him in various Sonic games. To see him actually playable in a game would be fantastic, especially as a playable character in the aforementioned Sonic vs Shadow game I suggested.
Why this and not asking for a sequel to Sonic Chronicles? Well, here’s the thing: Sonic Chronicles was made by BioWare, which was bought by EA. The day I ask EA to make a Sonic game for me is the day I willingly pull out my own anus. However, I really liked the idea of an Echidna survivor from another dimension, and hey, we could REALLY use something new to do with Knuckles.
So there’s six thing I would like to see in future Sonic games. Leave your comments on what you’d like to see in future installments, and we shall see if any of these come true in the future. Ja né!
