Jyger’s Favourite 5 – 5 Things I Can’t Believe They Got Away With In Batman: The Animated Series

Anyone ever notice how there’s the occasional content in a kid’s show that maybe was a bit on the mature side, whether it be dark in atmosphere or risqué? Well, I’ve been marathoning my favourite episodes of Batman TAS…again, and I can’t help but notice several moments that clearly slipped through the cracks on that show. Now, keep in mind, this IS a WB cartoon, and we already know how they managed similar situations with Animaniacs (by purposely writing something far worse in the script as a distraction for the editors so that what they actually intended to get through would), but there’s at least one or two of these that…well, you’ll see. Anyway, let’s start off with one of my favourite two-parters in the show…

#1 – Robin’s Reckoning

This is actually one of the situations where I can’t imagine how no one noticed anything wrong with it…and yet actually had a problem with something completely different. In the first part of this episode, wherein the origins of Robin in this universe are elaborated on, we see Batman disguised as a thug and gambling with other thugs while trying to get information on Tony Zucco. Apparently, Batman gambling was controversial for some people. Now, I’m not gonna debate the issues of gambling in a kid’s show, since everyone has their own views on stuff like that. What boggles my mind, though, is that apparently nobody raised an eye when, in the next episode, we see a young Dick Grayson saving a prostitute from her pimp after said pimp finds out she’s been holding onto some of the cash she’s been making and is about to assault her. Um, WHAT??? How was GAMBLING the thing that caught people’s attention and THAT went completely under the radar? Granted, they never actually outright state that she’s a prostitute, but any adult with a brain can tell that’s what’s going on. And what’s really weird is that nobody had a problem with gambling in another episode, Joker’s Wild, where most of the episode took place at a casino! Just a little consistency is all I’m asking for, folks!

#2 – Mad Love

Before anyone says anything, I actually really like this episode. It’s a great look into Harley Quinn’s backstory and how/why she became infatuated with the Joker. However, I still don’t know how the hell they managed to get this past the censors. Not only is it pretty explicitly made clear that these two have had sex in the past, but there were SEVERAL instances of domestic abuse in this episode. True, we’ve seen at LEAST hints of that before with Harley and Joker, but now it’s at the forefront of the episode. Now, it’s part of the main driving plot. And it’s not even just her getting it, either. We hear Joker tell a story of how his father beat him as a child and broke his nose. Granted, it’s pretty clear that the Joker is lying to get sympathy (or, if you believe The Killing Joke, that he’s gone SO insane that he can’t remember his real past), but it’s still pretty harsh stuff for the audience to listen to.

#3 – The Ultimate Thrill

If it really is true that they used the Animaniacs trick with this episode, I NEED to see what the original script for this episode looked like. I like to refer to this episode as “Count the Innuendos”. Seriously, just watch this episode and see if you can spot ’em all. And yes, most of them come from Roxy…and yes, that’s kinda why I like her. lol Still, one thing I’ve always tilted my head at is why she chose to become a thief. I get she’s in it for the thrills, but wouldn’t she get the same rush from being a costumed heroine? Granted, I could see Batman still having to bring her in due to how reckless she is, but she’d get the same thrill, and honestly, looking at her two appearances in the entirety of the DCAU, no one ever gets seriously hurt around her. Hell, most of the time, the person in the most danger is HER. Oh, and I should also mention that this is the first appearance of Batgirl’s “sources”…who are very clearly supposed to be prostitutes. I don’t necessarily mind that TOO much. What I DO mind is how one of them is very clearly designed to resemble Black Canary. Thankfully, we got the real Black Canary in Justice League Unlimited, because otherwise, we would’ve been left to assume that she was a prostitute in this universe…which would somehow actually be even worse than her depiction in All-Star Batman and Robin.

#4 – Girl’s Night Out

Batgirl rides Supergirl… … … … … …Do I even NEED to say anything else? Well, I don’t, but Harley apparently has some comments…

Also, at one point while they’re in flight, you can see Supergirl’s panties… …Dear God. -_-

#5 – Love Is A Croc

This one is just all kinds of wrong. And I don’t know who thought it’d be appropriate to keep this in, but I really hope they got smacked up the side of the head for it. The episode is about Baby Doll teaming up with Killer Croc, the former being clearly infatuated with the latter. I would like to remind you all that Baby Doll’s whole gimmick is that she’s an adult woman with a severe form of systemic hypoplasia, meaning she looks like a child. Now, admittedly, because it’s clearly just a one-way thing, and she’s not actually a child but looks and occasionally acts like one (likely due to being locked in that appearance for so long), it’s not AS creepy as it could be… … … …until we see this bit of dialogue.

Yeah, I don’t wanna know either, Batman! What the hell?! o.O I actually even kinda like the episode, but that one exchange of dialogue is just…EW.

Jyger’s Favourite 5 – 5 Favourite Joker Quotes

…You saw the title. These are my 5 Favourite Quotes of The Joker. Keep in mind, these aren’t in any specific order, and come from many different interpretations of the character, including the comics, the TV shows, the movies, and the video games, which inevitably means this includes spoilers for anything they come from. So, let’s not wait any longer and send in the clowns with the first up to bat (no pun intended)…

#1 – “What the heck, I’ll laugh anyway” from Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker

This is the scene where Joker reveals exactly what he did to Robin, in horrific detail, via a home movie style video. But the great quote for me is what comes near the end of it, when he finally presses one of the last buttons Batman has…

“You would’ve been proud to see him so strong – but all too soon, the serums and the shocks took their toll…and the dear lad began to share such secrets with me. Secrets that are mine alone to know… Bruce. It’s true, Batsy! I know everything. And kinda like the kid who peeks at his Christmas presents, I must admit, it’s sadly anti-climactic. Behind all the sturm and batarang, you’re just a little boy in a playsuit, crying for mommy and daddy! It’d be funny if it weren’t so pathetic…Oh, what the heck, I’ll laugh anyway! HA HA HA HA HA HAA!”

#2 – “Madness is the emergency exit” from Batman: The Killing Joke

This quote comes from when Joker has Commissioner Gordon held captive on a ride with photos of Barbara Gordon displayed from when she was shot and stripped naked, all just to try to break the Commish, and…Well, I’m gonna let Troy Baker field this one.

#3 – “It’s not even breakfast” from Batman: Arkham City

In the climax of Arkham City…Well, Joker will explain in a bit, but he’s done a shit-ton of horrible stuff. But what caps it all off is this one exchange between him and Batman over the cure for Joker’s fatal ailment, where they pretty much spell out the nature of their encounters…

“Quick, the cure! What are you waiting for? Come on! I killed your girlfriend, poisoned Gotham, and hell, it’s not even breakfast! But so what? We all know you’ll save me.” “…Every decision you’ve ever made ends in death and misery. People die. I stop you…You’ll just break out and do it again.” “Heheheh…Think of it as a running gag!”

#4 – “Why so serious?” from The Dark Knight

…Because how could I not include this? The thing is, you gotta figure this quote plus the completely contradictory quote later on indicates one of two things: Either The Joker is completely insane and doesn’t remember how he got his scars, referencing back to The Killing Joke and how he remembered his origins slightly different from day-to-day, or he’s a liar and his explanations are mere parody at such simplistic reasons for what he does.

“Do you wanna know how I got these scars? My father was a drinker…and a fiend. And one night, he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn’t like that. Not…one…bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. He turns to me, and he says, ‘Why so serious?’ He comes at me with the knife — ‘Why so serious?!’ Sticks the blade in my mouth — ‘Let’s put a smile on that face!’ And… why so serious?”

#5 – “April fools!” from Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth

…Again, I think I’m gonna let someone else take this one. Here’s a 3D animation done by jwhit3d to the voice acting of Pgirts, with a little bit of Mark Hamill and Arleen Sorkin at the end from Batman: The Animated Series for flavour. 😀

Tales of the Caped Crusader – My New Fanfic (WARNING – SELF-PROMOTION AHEAD, LOL)

So, after talking a lot about How Would I Rebuild The DC Universe From Scratch, as well as rewatching some DC movies and Batman: The Animated Series, I got the idea for a fanfic that I’m actually writing right now on FanFiction.net: Tales of the Caped Crusader.

So here’s the basic premise: Bruce Wayne is in the 4th year of his tenure as Batman, and he’s begun to feel the effects on his mind and his body. He’s out later every night, he’s getting into nastier fights, and he’s doing it all alone. Dick Grayson has been in his care for about a year and is nearing the end of his training, but now Bruce is beginning to have second thoughts about letting a child (Dick is 13 in this fic) get involved in what he sees as a war of sorts against crime in Gotham City. At this point, Bruce has met Superman and Wonder Woman and knows who they are, but there is no Justice League, primarily because there has been no need for a large team of superheroes, since the three of them have been doing alright on their own.

 

Anyway, the story picks up as Bruce is beginning to have doubts as to whether or not his father would approve of some of his decisions, namely his training of Dick to become Robin. However, during a night’s brawl against some goons, Batman meets a detective claiming to know who he is. More-so, he suggests that Bruce was not the first person to become Batman. In reality, Thomas Wayne had taken up the cape and cowl for a single night. Of course, the obvious questions come to mind immediately: Why was Thomas Wayne Batman? How does this detective know this? Why is Bruce only just now learning about it? All those questions have answers, some of which will shock Bruce, and others will give resolution to his doubts, as he is forced to learn the hidden truth about The Batman.

As you can tell, the plot takes elements from a lot of different stories and continuities. For example, Thomas Wayne has been Batman before, and he’ll be wearing the costume from Flashpoint, minus the guns or anything else lethal since he’s not a killer here. Also, a lot of characters from various Batman and Bat-related stories are involved. For example, the new version of Copperhead fights Batman at one point, Rupert Thorne is mentioned here and there, there’ll probably be more that appear as time goes by, and even the detective relaying all of this to Bruce is someone you should all know, but I suppose I’m getting ahead of myself.

Now, will I do anything beyond this? I dunno yet. I have something in mind, but I don’t know if I’ll do it or not. In fact, I’m not gonna make that decision yet. I’m just gonna write this fic, and then whatever happens after that will be then, not now. How Would I Rebuild The DC Universe From Scratch – The Joker, Lex Luthor, Poison Ivy, And More

Welcome back to more of How Would I Rebuild The DC Universe From Scratch, and honestly, the more I do this, the more I actually feel like doing a fanfic for a DC character. Actually, I have an idea in mind for a short one that I’ll probably do on FanFiction.net (and yes, I DO have a profile on there), but again, it’ll be a short one. Regardless, let’s move on to some of the villains of the DC Universe, and who better to start with than…

The Joker

I’d wanna take him back to being the Clown Prince of Crime, the guy who, while he was still a murdering psychopath, usually did his crimes in a sophomoric fashion. So really, something closer to his Batman: The Animated Series interpretation. That said, I would also wanna include some elements of the more horrifying Joker, in that he doesn’t want to kill Batman (because he’s too damned fun), and he tells different versions of how he got to be who he is, leaving the reader to guess if he’s a liar or if he honestly can’t remember. Is he a psychotic lunatic, or is he a parody of a psychotic lunatic?

Lex Luthor

Honestly, for all the crap I give some of the Superman books nowadays, I rather like the idea of Lex Luthor being under lock and key, but still having ways of interacting with the outside world and making life miserable for Superman. Plus, it raises a few interesting questions about him. Is he really unable to escape his cell, or does he stay there for his own protection? Think about it: While he’s under arrest, it’s not as if Superman can do anything to him. That said, I would also want to reintroduce Nasthalthia ‘Nasty’ Luthor, but as someone who might have her own plans for LexCorp with Lex behind bars.

Cheetah

Again, I actually rather like what The New 52 did with Cheetah. She’s fast, powerful, and most dangerous of all, smart enough to know how, when, and where to hit the Justice League. And that’s exactly what I’d wanna continue to do with her, since we just don’t get enough solo villains who can do harm to the Justice League without seeming absurdly powerful. Also, she tests the levels of Wonder Woman‘s compassion, which lets us see just how deep it goes…and as it turns out, it goes REALLY deep, and I’m awesome with that. 🙂

Catwoman

Did anybody read the Batman and Catwoman issue of Batman and Robin recently? They did? Okay: DO MORE OF THAT! Seriously, I love the idea that she’s simultaneously a jewel thief/government agent/thorn in Batman’s side/Batman’s main love interest! Maybe it’s just because it reminds me of Rouge the Bat (which is ironic, if you think about it long enough), but it just works for me, and I think it fits Miss Kyle VERY well. She’s the very blatant cat burglar, won’t make any excuses for that, and will find herself on the wrong side of the law frequently. And yet, if someone is threatening a kid, or about to kill Batman, or blow up a city, she will whip their ass clean off.

The Red Lantern Corps

Given what I suggested for The Flash before, having the Blue Lantern Ring, it makes sense to me that, in addition to his usual cast of enemies, that members of the Red Lantern Corps would be his enemies. After all, a Blue Lantern Ring can negate a Red Lantern Ring’s corruptive effects on someone, and as a group trying to spread murderous rage across the galaxy, they would of course see The Flash as a massive threat to them. As for which one would be the primary thorn in Flash’s side, probably Bleez, to give her something to do. Of course, members would also cause trouble for whoever the main Green Lantern on Earth is…which reminds me…

…By the way, is my constant whoring out of these polls getting annoying? Yes? Good! XD

Starro the Conqueror (who apparently has no logo other than himself, lol)

For Starro the Conqueror, I’d bring him back as the first opponent the Justice League had to face. And really, can you blame me? He’s a very legit threat, able to bend anyone to his will, no matter how powerful. And frankly, there’s only a handful of ways to stop him, specifically Wonder Woman’s lasso and a Blue Lantern ring, which would give these characters major reason to band together, since they’d fall to Starro’s sway separately. It just seems like the best set-up for a Justice League story, which is probably why they did it in the first place.

Poison Ivy

For my favourite villainess of all time, I think I’d want Poison Ivy to be a Justice League/Birds of Prey villain, not just a Batman villain. Why? Think about her abilities for a moment: She can manipulate and control any and all plant life and even create plant-like monsters. Now think about how much of the world is plants of some kind or another. She’s also a master manipulator and seductress, able to bend anyone to her will, even Superman if she has her hands on Kryptonite. Suddenly, kinda makes you wonder how one man dressed like a bat can handle her all on his own. Granted, given the right circumstances, I can see him one-upping her, but for the most part, she seems like she should be way out of his league.

Anyway, that’s enough villains for now, though expect me to come back with more later. In the meantime, there’re still a few more heroes I need to talk about, aren’t there…?

My 12 Favourite Bat Villains

So at the beginning of the month, I listed my 10 Favourite DC Villains. However, since I knew it would otherwise be a Batman/Batgirl bonanza of baddies, I limited them to two. And since I wanna cover 10 villains who I haven’t already covered in my previous list, and two of my favourites are characters I’ve yet to shut up about, let’s just say that they’re #1 and #2…

#1 – Poison Ivy, and #2 – The Joker

…and let’s look at #3 – #12 of my 12 Favourite Bat Villains!…Also, just FYI, be prepared for more than one of these choices to be as a result of Batman: The Animated Series. Just FYI.

#3 – Harleen Quinzel, AKA Harley Quinn

What’s funny about this one is that she’s worked VERY closely with both my #1 and #2 picks, being the on-again/off-again sidekick/one-way lover of The Joker, and the on-again/off-again partner/BFF of Poison Ivy. Originally, she was just The Joker’s henchman from Batman: The Animated Series. Once a psychiatrist, she was drawn in by Joker and became part of his criminal lifestyle. Since then, while she still regularly finds herself suckered back into working for The Joker, she’s also branched out on her own on occasion, teaming with Poison Ivy and Catwoman to become the Gotham City Sirens, being made to join the Suicide Squad, and even leading Joker’s army of crooks in an alternate universe in Injustice: Gods Among Us. Like The Joker, she tends to enter combat against Batman and other superheroes with an array of more comedic looking weapons, though they are generally quite lethal. Also, due to injections from Poison Ivy, she’s immune to most known forms of poisons and toxins.

#4 – Clayface

There’s been a few villains who have answered to the name Clayface, though arguably the most well-known is Basil Karlo. An insane Hollywood actor, he was originally just a villain in a mask, but later injected himself with samples of the others to become Clayface, gaining their shape-shifting abilities. Not only has he battled Batman, Robin, and Batgirl, but he’s also gone up against Wonder Woman and Donna Troy, and has had less than stellar relations with Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy. Recently, his shape-shifting powers have evolved to the point where he can assume the DNA of anyone he comes in contact with. However, this has come with a heavy price, as his own DNA has all but rotted away.

#5 – Victor Fries, AKA Mr. Freeze

Originally just a minor villain by the name of Mr. Zero, Paul Dini reinvented Mr. Freeze as quite possibly one of the most sympathetic villains in DC history. Voiced by the late great Michael Ansara, we learn that Victor Fries was a scientist whose wife, Nora, had to be cryogenically frozen to keep her alive after she’d been plagued with disease. At some point, Doctor Fries was involved in an incident with cryogenic substances that left him mutated. Now, he requires a cryo-suit that keeps his body at sub-zero temperatures to keep himself alive. Turning to a life of crime, his goal is to eventually obtain the resources required to find a cure for his wife, even if he has to kill to get it. He’s typically armed with a freeze ray of varying design and overall power, while his cryo-suit increases his physical strength to levels where he might actually be able to duke it out with the next guy on my list…

#6 – Bane

The man who broke the Bat, Bane is a criminal whose genius and physical prowess make him one of Batman’s most dangerous foes. However, I feel like something writers tend to forget, even when they know he has a genius level IQ, is that it was because of THAT that he beat Batman initially, NOT his brute strength. Bane knew that Batman could take him in a straight out fight. So, rather than attempt that, he opted to release the inmates at Arkham Asylum and let Batman go about bringing them all back in, all the while Bane deduced Batman’s alter ego and prepared to face the highly exhausted Bruce Wayne in his own home, when and where he was least expecting attack. This is what makes him so dangerous: It’s not his impressive strength that might actually be enough to inflict small amounts of damage to Superman, but rather, it’s his mind that makes him a near-unstoppable monster.

#7 – Roxanne Sutton, AKA Roxy Rocket

…I just like this one, okay? Although I find it interesting that she chose to be a villain. Given her back-story, she could’ve just as easily decided to become a crime fighter. Roxanne Sutton was a stunt double for big action movies, but was blacklisted when she began making the stunts too dangerous, clearly getting off on the thrill. Frankly, if she wants a thrill, she shoulda helped the Justice League against Darkseid. Now THERE’S a life-or-death scenario for ya. Then again, she’s also tussled with Batman, Batgirl, and even Superman on occasion, so make of that what you will. She’s never seen in action without her trademark rocket, which she has spares of hidden away for emergencies, and she generally likes to be armed with flare guns and other explosives. She’s not really cruel to the people she robs, though. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her intentionally try to outright kill anyone, save for the end of her début, when she almost crashed herself and Batman into a cliff, and we got to see just how far her obsession with thrills (and pushing the limits of the censors) went…

…Yeah, don’t pretend you weren’t thinking it. lol

#8 – Edward Nygma, AKA The Riddler

Riddle me this, riddle me that…he really SHOULD be afraid of the big bad Bat. Nevertheless, Edward Nygma has proven again and again that he has no fear of Batman. While he’s by no means a match for Batman on a physical level, he lives to test him on a mental level. In fact, his obsession with proving to be Batman’s intellectual superior is usually what leads him to leave riddles for his enemy, to see if he can actually keep up. However, Batman more often than not is more than capable, which has led to more than one humiliating defeat for The Riddler. Still, he should never be underestimated, as he has at times gone to Joker levels of manipulation and cruelty.

#9 – The Court of Owls

Kinda cheating, I know, but it’s hard to pin down a specific individual within the group that makes a better antagonist for Batman than the others, other than Lincoln March/Thomas Wayne Jr., whereas the group as a whole has proven to be a MASSIVE threat to Batman more than once in the past couple of years. They’re deeply entrenched in Gotham’s past, their soldiers are undead and near-unstoppable, and they have near-infinite amounts of time and resources with which to make their plans. Eliminating them for good may yet prove to be impossible, but their plans can be stopped, even if only long enough to force them back into hiding.

#10 – Shauna Belzer, AKA The Ventriloquist

If you thought the original Ventriloquist was creepy, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! This woman is a freaking horror movie monster! Like the others, she’s a psychotic killer with impeccable voice-throwing and impersonation skills. Where she differs is her general attitude, her sickly appearance, and the fact that she may or may not be a metahuman of some sort, able to control dead or otherwise inanimate objects. For example, her doll, ‘Ferdie’, and even her dead parents. This hasn’t been confirmed, however, as it could simply be some sort of trick, but there’s no way to know so far…which is just how I like it, to be honest. Of course, as her appearance might suggest, she’s not exactly very adept at defending herself otherwise, and is taken down rather easily. Still, that requires one to get past Ferdie and the rest of her unwilling accomplices.

#11 – Harvey Dent, AKA Two-Face

You know how I said Mr. Freeze is one of the most sympathetic villains ever? Well, if there was ever another DC villain to dispute that title, it’s these next two, starting with Two-Face. Once Harvey Dent, a district attorney who, together with Batman and Commissioner Gordon, sought to put the worst of Gotham behind bars, he faced horrid tragedy when the left side of his face was horribly burned. With that act, a lifetime spent keeping a lid on his anger, bipolar disorder, and paranoia were undone, creating the split personality of Two-Face. His obsession over the number two has led him to enact crimes centered around it, and he’s obsessive-compulsive toward his coin, which he uses to settle most of his decisions. And if that doesn’t seem terrifying to you, just imagine a man holding a gun to your head, flipping a coin, and then trying not to piss yourself in fear over the results.

#12 – Mary Dahl, AKA Baby Doll

Yeah, it was a tough call deciding on the last pick. Granted, guys like Penguin, Hush, Professor Pyg, Ra’s al Ghul, and Scarecrow are great villains, but for me, this is a villain who, despite appearances, should NEVER be taken lightly in terms of overall threat level, and is really hard to hate, given her circumstances. Mary Dahl, an actress born with a condition that kept her from growing past the physical stature of a little girl, she became the sitcom character Baby Doll, until the show was cancelled and she eventually was set on a life of crime due to general reactions to her appearance. She came very close to murdering her castmates in an explosion, but was stopped by Batman. And I’m not gonna lie here, people: This episode of Batman: The Animated Series might possibly have the saddest ending to a DCAU production EVER. Don’t believe me? Well…you’ve been warned, people.

…I warned ya. And frankly, I’m not really sure why she was never used in the comics. Despite her obvious flaws, she’s inventive, creative, manipulative, and has a mean streak longer than…Yeah, I’m not using the short jokes. That’s a good way to get smacked. I’d kinda like to see her tussle with Babs one of these days in the comics. But, if not, I can always look back on this episode with fond, albeit sad, memories.

Jyger’s Favourite 5 – 5 Misses of the DCAU

Y’know, I really LOVE the DC Animated Universe, most off all being Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited. It just feels it has some of the all-time best interpretations of certain characters from DC Comics. That said, not EVERYTHING they did was golden. And that’s not a check against it, either. It’s perfectly normal and understandable. They just kinda bug me a little. So I thought I’d go ahead and list 5 of the ones that bug me most. Just remember, this is not meant to diminish anyone’s thoughts on the DCAU.

#1 – Galatea

While I like the fact that they introduced a villain specifically for Supergirl, I don’t particularly like the one they went with. Not that there’s much wrong with Galatea from a character standpoint, but I don’t like that they basically took Power Girl, gave her the same backstory as Superboy (except that she’s Supergirl’s clone instead of Superman’s), and then made her unrepentantly evil.

#2 – Batman and Batgirl As A Couple

…Excuse me, I just had to vomit, as I do every time I think of these two as a couple. I’m sorry, but Batman and Batgirl should NEVER be romantic with each other. EVER. It’s icky as all hell. I can see a one way attraction from Babs for a short-term plot, but never as a couple, if for no other reason than HOW MUCH OLDER IS HE THAN HER, ANYWAY??? XP

#3 – TINO (Tim In Name Only)

Again, not a knock against the character, but I’m not sure why he’s named Tim Drake. He just feels WAY more like Jason Todd to me. Think about it: Second Robin, parents dead, kind of a snarky bastard, lack of control over his anger, violent/tragic end to his career as Robin due to the Joker, etc. I know, he has SOME detective and computer skills, but I don’t think it’s enough to justify calling him Tim Drake. Just my opinion.

#4 – The Teen Titans Who Never Were

I think there MAY have been a plan to involve the Titans in the DCAU, but the fact that they never showed up despite being mentioned twice in Static Shock is very odd to me. While I’ve never seen the original pilot for the Justice League animated series, which showed Robin, Impulse, and a female Cyborg with the League, I’m going to assume that they, Static Shock, Beast Boy (who was referenced once), Speedy (who cameod in JLU), and possibly Supergirl and a few other teenage superheroes would’ve formed the Titans in the DCAU. But unfortunately, it never came to be, thus resulting in it sadly becoming a major miss for the DCAU. I hear they might be looking to bring back the DCAU in a couple of years, and with any luck they might do this then…and hopefully, this next thing too…

#5 – Not Going Through With The Birds Of Prey

Okay, lemme explain this one: There was an episode of JLU entitled Double Date that was written by Gail Simone that featured Black Canary and Huntress together on a mission. Now the original script called for Barbara Gordon getting hurt and becoming Oracle, at which point she forms the two into the Birds of Prey. However, because of issues involving the rights to animate Batgirl (see “Bat-embargo”), this idea got vetoed in it instead became about Huntress and The Question going after Steven Mandragora and clashing with Green Arrow and Black Canary. It feels like they really missed out on a great opportunity here. I know Huntress and Black Canary got together for missions later on, but it woulda been even better with Barbara in the mix as well. Like I said, I’d like to see Birds of Prey done when they bring back the DCAU, possibly see them going against the Gotham City Sirens.

So yeah, those are the 5 misses that bug me most. But even with them, the DC Animated Universe was awesome, and I can’t wait for them to bring it back someday, and I will see you all when that marvellous day comes. Ja né!

Jyger’s Favourite 10?! – 10 Favourite Animated Women of All Time

Okay, same rules apply last time, only this time I’m looking at 10 of my all time favourite animated women. So let’s go ahead and kick this off with one I’m sure some were probably surprised wasn’t in the animated hotties list…

#1 – Wonder Woman from Justice League

Although I also count the 2009 movie version as tied with it, since they’re both different takes on the same character and are both AWESOME.

I don’t get why, given my love of dark-haired strong women, but I don’t feel physically attracted to Wonder Woman. Maybe it’s just because my love of the character in other ways just completely overwhelms that. She’s an inspiration among DC Superheroes, men and women, for her strength, honour, and compassion. What I don’t get is why that seems so hard for others to get. The worst example is the version that appeared in the pilot for the 2011 Wonder Woman series that, thank goodness, never came to fruition. Then again, as Lewis Lovhaug has brought up, she IS something of a walking contradiction at times, because while she IS the most compassionate and loving of the Justice League, if you wanna fight a war, you bring Wonder Woman. Still, if you want good examples of her, watch the 2009 movie or the Justice League cartoon.

#2 – Tish from The Weekenders

I know a lot of people really liked the show Recess, but I was always way more into The Weekenders, and Tish is easily my favourite part of the show. Intelligent, clever, witty, and also possessing the occasional hilarious quirk. I think my favourite is when she starts talking like cheesy old-school detectives for an entire weekend after having a marathon of detective movies…Just trust me, it’s funnier than I’m making it sound.

#3 – Yuki Nagato from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Yeah, kinda saw this coming, huh? What with the character N. Harmonik played on my show basically being Yuki. I really feel like they should’ve done a spin-off show that centres around her. I’ve already reviewed one of my favourite episodes of the show, which really helps to show just why Nagato is so awesome. In addition to that, while they technically aren’t in canon with either the show or the manga, I highly recommend watching the episodes of Haruhi-chan that centre around her. They are some of the funniest things I have EVER seen, and while she occasionally breaks out of her usual character, she mostly stays true to it just enough to make what she does in the show all the funnier.

#4 – Dawn from Pokémon

I’ve mentioned this before, but Dawn is easily my favourite of the female protagonists from the Pokémon anime. First off, she wasn’t really so much a tomboy like Misty or May were before her, which made her a bit more fresh a character to have around. She was also quite clever with her moves in Contests, and as I’ve brought up before, she acted as a bit of an inspiration for Ash, her Contest moves giving Ash ideas for tactics to use in battle. And when she was down in the dumps and on her losing streak, you genuinely felt bad for her. I think my favourite episodes of hers was when they went to Veilstone City and Dawn helped to bring Maylene out of her funk with a Gym Battle, then went on to cheer both Maylene and Ash in their battle the next episode.

#5 – Raven from Teen Titans

Like I said before, Raven was just pure awesomeness on Teen Titans. A lot of times she acted as a foil for Beast Boy and his repeated failed attempts at being funny, which honestly I found WAY funnier than anything Beast Boy ever did on his own. The dark nature of her powers and, in turn, her personality, made her unique on a team that was usually pretty bright and chipper. But as time went on, you really saw just how much her friends really mattered to her, to the point where her sort of heel turn was only done so that her friends would remain unharmed, and even then it was the love for her friends and their love for her that brought her back to good.

#6 – Cybersix from…well, Cybersix

Huh, I sense a number 6 theme. Anyway, Cybersix is just awesome in every way. I mean really, can you get much more badass than a super-heroine who leaps from building-tops, getting the drop on mutants in a kickass costume she stole from a prostitute?…Okay, that little bit wasn’t in the cartoon, just the comics. However, seeing as how they never addressed where it came from in the show, I therefore consider it to still be canon in the cartoon. Also, in a nice twist on the old-fashioned cunning disguise of a pair of hipster glasses, she also disguises herself as a man to hide her identity…so that she can spend more time with her love interest…Okay, suddenly this turned kinda stalkerish. lol

#7 – Rika Nonaka from Digimon

Rika played an interesting position on the Digimon Tamers team, as the one with all the attitude on previous teams (and every team since) was a boy. Yeah, she kind of had a more antagonistic relation to the team early on, but as time went by, she came to accept the fact that they were a team and that these were her friends. Also, she was the most adept at DigiModifying in battle, and unlike other female DigiDestined to come before her, her partner actually reached the Mega Level, though admittedly one other female DigiDestined has reached the same achievement, and two of Rika’s predecessors reached the Mega Level in the Digimon Adventure game for the PSP.

#8 – Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon

The most hot-tempered (and hot bodied, :3) of the Sailor Scouts, Sailor Mars is easily my favourite character of that show. Armed with the fire of Mars and the abilities of a Shinto priestess, Rei Hino served as the second-in-command of the team, and probably one of the more potent fighters of the group. As I mentioned before, she had a bit of an attitude problem early on in that she refused to acknowledge Serena as the leader, but put yourself in her shoes (which might be hard, considering I have NO idea how she runs and fights in those high heels, but whatever): You’re one of the strongest and most talented members of the team, and yet THIS klutz…

…is the leader. You don’t know why, you don’t know what she could’ve possibly done to deserve it, you’re just asked to accept it. Would YOU be okay with that? After the truth of Serena’s past as Princess of the Moon Kingdom was revealed, though, and more of Serena’s more compassionate side came out, Rei kinda chilled a little bit, and most of her issues with Serena afterwards was more friendly rivalry/teasing.

#9 – Akiza Izinski from Yugioh 5D’s

For me, Akiza is easily the greatest female character from the entirety of Yugioh. She has the sex appeal and raw Dueling talent of Mai Valentine and Alexis Rhodes, and when she realised that Yusei was trying to help her, she gained the appreciation for friendship of Téa Gardner without having to become a glorified cheerleader. She was also a Psychic Duelist, and could materialise Duel Monsters for real, an ability that saved their asses more than once. I do wish that she had gained an advanced Synchro Monster like Yusei and Jack did, but considering that by the end she was still able to kick some ass without one, she may not have needed it.

So yeah, yer thinking to yourself, “Go ahead, Jyger. We know who #10 is, so just get it over with”. Well, believe it or not, my last pick might just surprise you a bit…

#10 – Barbara Gordon from Batman: The Animated Series

Yes, I’ve gone on and on and on about how hot Poison Ivy is. However, the fact is, I find Barbara’s run throughout Batman: The Animated Series, as well as her role in Batman Beyond, to make her a bit more interesting character to follow. She started her run in the show as just Commissioner Gordon’s daughter and a love interest for Dick Grayson, which inevitably got her into trouble at times, but she eventually decided to don her own cape and cowl, becoming Batgirl. At first, Bruce and Dick weren’t all that pleased by her presence, but after a while, Bruce welcomed her onto the team, becoming Batman’s partner whenever Robin wasn’t available. At some point after the death of the Joker, she retired her position and became a cop, eventually rising to the same position her father had once held, which is admittedly very different from what became of her in the comics, but still makes sense from a storyline perspective. I like it. What I don’t like is the idea that her and Bruce were in a romantic relationship at some point…Ew…She was initially distrustful of Terry, AKA Batman Beyond, but after some time working together, they eventually came to have a similar relationship her father had once had with Batman in a sort of everything-old-is-new-again type of deal.

So that’s my 10 Favourite Animated Women of All Time. Now if you’re wondering why certain women aren’t on here, don’t worry, I plan to do a list of honourable mentions later, but for now, this is the list as it stands. Feel free to discuss below and also compile your own lists if you’d like. Ja né!

Jyger’s Favourite 5 – 5 Favourite Animated Hotties

…*sighs* Yes, I’m doing this, okay? And yes, I know I’m coming off as an objective pig here. Don’t worry, I plan to do my favourite animated women based on actual character later, but I DO gotta play to the male demographic here, so what can I do? Not to say that these women aren’t strong characters either, mind you, and most will likely end up on that list too…which will mean it’ll probably be more than 5. But before I get to this, I need to set some ground rules.

1. No hentai. So Reika Kitami is unfortunately out.
2. No anthropomorphics. Not because I personally have any kind of issue with it, I just don’t want to open the door to THAT little argument that never wants to frigging go away. lol
3. Only one entry per franchise. So if I pick someone from say Batman The Animated Series (and I did, lol), I can’t pick anyone else from it.
4. This is JUST MY LIST. I am not arguing with anyone else’s, it’s just my list. So don’t freak out if one of yours isn’t on here or if I don’t include any from other well-known lists, AKA Doug Walker’s.
5. For anyone who finds this particularly distasteful for any reason, TURN AWAY NOW. This is your only warning.

Anyway, with all that said, let’s go ahead and get the obvious one outta the way…

#1 – Poison Ivy from Batman: The Animated Series

I’m well aware that getting involved with this woman could be hazardous to my health, but I might just chance it, honestly. Now I should note that I’m referring to the version we saw before the big art change. I never really liked when they changed her skin green. And yeah, I know they did it in the comics, but I really liked how Ivy looked with normal looking skin (no racist jokes, you know what I mean, people).

#2 – Rei Hino, AKA Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon

As anyone who knows me personally can tell you, I have a MASSIVE weakness for women with dark hair. I also find myself hopelessly attracted to strong women. Put them together and you get Sailor Mars. OH MAN, do I love Sailor Mars. Yeah, she was kind of a dick in the early episodes, but to be fair, Serena was kind of a screw up and a ditz, and it must’ve been hard to accept her as a leader, but she eventually did and mellowed out a bit.

#3 – Raven from Teen Titans

Yeah, I know a lot of people prefer Starfire, but I was more a Raven kind of guy. Her sarcasm, her dark nature, and honestly, I found her to be kind of hot too. She also seemed kind of lonely at times, like no one really understood her, which on at least one occasion caused trouble for her. Oh, and I would just like to note that unlike the comics, Raven only turned heel one time in the show, and even then not really.

#4 – Akiza from Yugioh 5D’s

Beware the coming of the uber boob! XD Seriously, I suspect the real reason Bonds Beyond Time didn’t feature all three casts interacting was because they couldn’t risk putting Akiza and Mai Valentine in the same shot for fear it would cause the big screen to implode. I think probably my favourite episode of the show is when Akiza decides for herself that she wants to be a Turbo Duelist as well and really struggles to make it happen. It took a lot of guts…as well as a skin tight leather riding suit that made her cleavage look ginormous. Y’know, for kids. lol

#5 – Elisa Maza from Gargoyles

Like I said, I find myself hopelessly attracted to strong women… … …She’s a cop! And not just a cop in any ol’ city, she’s with the NYPD in a universe filled with all manners of terrifying threats. That requires some serious inner strength to deal with, and we see her get taken to the limits of that inner strength more than once.

So, that’s my list for my favourite animated hotties, but we’re not done yet my friends. Check in next time when I reveal my 10 Favourite Animated Women of All Time! Ja né!

Jyger’s Favourite 10?!?! – 10 Favourite Opening Themes of the 90’s

So with the return of the Nostalgia Critic, I’ve been getting nostalgia fever for the 90’s all over again. Sure, 90’s tv shows could be freaking weird at times, but they were still pretty awesome in their own right. And one thing that definitely helped to get us pumped for the shows was their opening themes. Heck, there are even some shows that I didn’t watch but still managed to have awesometastic themes. But which are my own personal favourites? Well, that’s what I’m here to look at. But whereas I usually list 5 of my favourites within categories on this blog, there are simply WAY too many to keep to that little amount. With that said, let’s check out my 10 Favourite Opening Themes of the 90’s, and given my love of comics, let’s start off with…

Bet’cha weren’t expecting THAT, were ya? But for real, I loved Cybersix when I was able to catch it on TV, which I seem to recall being difficult for some reason. And don’t ask me what my cable plan was like, I have no frakking clue. But it was always great, and this song served as a great means to get us into the show. It’s weird that a song that captures Cybersix’s more vulnerable side is playing while she’s kicking all kinds of ass, but it manages to work here. I also haven’t had the chance to read the comics, which as I understand it were even darker in tone, but I get the feeling I would have this song playing in my head at all times while reading.

Y’know, I hear a lot of people ripping on F•R•I•E•N•D•S a lot. Even looking back on shows that were going at around the same time as it, they ALWAYS ripped on this show. So with all that said…Screw you, I loved this show! Was it silly? Yes. Did the characters get Flanderized over time? Sure. Did the cast use WAY too much hair gel? Frak yeah, they did! I don’t care, I still loved this show, and every time I hear this song, it reminds me of the days when I woulda loved to sit in with those guys at Central Perk…which is weird, since I don’t even drink coffee…Anyway…

It’s always been fascinating to me that, when you watch this intro, at no point in this intro do you see the word “Batman” written ANYWHERE. But let’s be honest, that’s what makes it so awesome: It doesn’t HAVE to. As soon as you see it, you immediately know you’re on the right channel, and it’s time for Batman: The Animated Series. This was probably one of the most badass cartoons of the 90’s, and man oh man, did it have a badass theme to go with.

Okay, technically my favourite version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? was the American one, but this show was pretty awesome too, and it had something the American lacked: A proper opening theme. It had a kind of theme, but if you asked me to hum it for you, I probably wouldn’t be able to. The British version on the other hand? Always loved this theme, and always got me in the mood for some hilarious improv, so much to the point that now when I’m watching the American version, I sometimes play this song first.

Yeah, like you didn’t know THIS was coming. Granted, I’m not one of those people who argues that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was the greatest of all the PR shows, or even that Go Go Power Rangers was the greatest theme of all, but they’re both among my favourites and are, for obvious reasons, the ones I’m most nostalgic for. For some weird reason, they decided to remix this theme for Power Rangers Samurai but without Ron Wasserman, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why. But whatever, this song remains awesome, and has scored a number of covers over the years…though one thing that always confused me was why Ron insisted on pronouncing it PoWA RanGAHS instead of PoWER RanGERS in the original version. Was that just a 90’s thing that I never got, or what?

Okay, admittedly I’m kind of pseudo cheating here since Digimon started airing in North America in Fall 1999 and lasted until June 24th, 2000. So yeah, it’s VERY barely a 90’s show, but since it started then, I’m still counting it. And honestly, the early days of the show when they were seven kids trying to survive in a world they didn’t understand? That was probably the best part of the show. There was this sense of wonder mixed with danger that never let up. And this theme, simplistic as it is, got me pumped for it every time I heard it.

Again, kinda knew this was gonna be on here. I know this is kinda weird to say but the original season of Pokémon is probably the one that had the most balls…No, not Poké Balls. Think about it, there were guns, there was a moment where Misty was bleeding, there were some traces of adult humour, and hell, Ash technically died in one episode. But above all else, I think the original season best captured the idea of a young kid way in over his head with something to prove to himself and the world, a feeling that was captured best by this theme. Granted, I do have some favourites besides this. In fact, I daresay there was only one Pokémon theme that I would consider bad, and that was the Battle Frontier theme. And oh yes, don’t worry, Battle Frontier WILL have its day on Jyger’s Rant…

Doesn’t get much more 90’s than Dragon Ball Z. I remember there were actually a couple of themes for this show, though, but this one’s my favourite, and is probably the one people remember most…Well, at least North Americans that watched it for the first time in English, anyway. But anyway, this song kicked all kinds of ass, and got us amped up for the show…even if most of the clips from the intro are from the CLEARLY non-canon movies and episodes several seasons away because the show had already finished its run in Japan by the time it started airing over here. Whoops.

Oops! That’s the version with the lyrics Doug Walker came up with. Hang on…

…Okay, I gotta admit to something. I never watched Superman: The Animated Series. I’m sorry, I don’t know what it was that turned me off to the show back then, but I just wasn’t interested. This kinda became a problem for me later on when Justice League started, so I had to read up on some stuff that happened in Superman and of course felt like an idiot. I will say I always liked the intro, though. Much like Batman’s intro, there are no lyrics, you never see the name of the show anywhere, but you know it’s Superman. Also, it possesses that same sorta triumphant tone that eventually fades into a more tender theme, then back to triumphant that pretty much every Superman theme either has or should have. So while I never watched the show, I gotta say this song definitely makes it to my soundtrack of 90’s television.

Frak yeah, this show was awesome! Gargoyles was probably the best damned cartoon that Disney ever put on. Dark, epic, engaging, damn near Shakespearian in how it tells the tales of some of these characters, and with plenty of humour to keep the kiddies from being too traumatised. lol Everything you want in a show, Gargoyles delivered, and this song and opening sequence captured every last bit of what made it awesome and reeled it for us for a little over a minute before letting loose the episode, and when the episode hit, you were frakking PSYCHED AS SHITE!

Jyger’s Favourite 5 – 5 Favourite Animated Villainesses

This is one I’ve actually been sitting on for a while now. Originally it was gonna be a video, and also it was gonna be contained to anime only, but I eventually decided to change it to include all forms of animation. I guess I just really like evil women as villains in my stories, and of course like to see them in my cartoons too. So let’s go ahead and look at five of my all-time favourites, and keep in mind that these are limited to one entry per franchise.

#1 – Pokémon Hunter J from Pokémon

I always felt like Pokémon needed a villain like Pokémon Hunter J: A villain who is ruthless, takes no nonsense, and because we don’t know her backstory or her motivations, she’s someone that cannot be reasoned with and is therefore more frightening. Now, I know a lot of people would likely say Jessie or Cassidy or Domino is the best villainess from Pokémon, but for me, it’s J. And why? BECAUSE SHE ACTUALLY TRIES TO KILL ASH! Everyone else just tries to get Ash out of the way, kidnap him, or at worst knock him out. J has actually fired Hyper Beams at him, had Drapion try to crush him, and dropped him out the back of her aircraft from super high up. In other words, she is thus guilty of not only poaching like most villains on the show, but also attempted murder…Not that it would matter though, since Ash would just regenerate. Hee-hee, never gets old.

#2 – Queen Beryl from Sailor Moon

Yes, I watched this show, I admit it. I’ll also admit that on the odd occasion that I get nostalgic for it, I have a couple of seasons of the dub. And in the initial season of the show, the big bad was Queen Beryl. Now the thing about Beryl was that she demonstrated a number of times that she had more than enough power to destroy Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts…at least if she’d done so early on. Sadly, as is the case with many evil rulers, she let her generals take care of her dirty work for her, punished them horrifically when they failed, and ultimately allowed her enemies to grow strong enough to take her down in the end. So yeah, not the sharpest tool in the shed, but she was powerful and wicked, and very sadistic to her enemies and to her underlings that fell out of her favour.

Now, I should note that as a kid, Beryl was not my favourite villainess from Sailor Moon. So why am I not counting them now? Well…because it was Zoisite. As you’ve probably noticed from the way I described Beryl, my main exposure to this show was the original English dub, and thus is the main form of it in my mind. This kinda messes with me as not only was Zoisite my favourite villain on the show, I actually had a crush on her…then I found out that Zoisite was really a dude and that they changed him to a girl in the dub because of his romantic affiliation with Malachite…Yeah, I was messed up for a while ‘cuz of that…

#3 Poison Ivy from Batman: The Animated Series

Before you say anything, let me just point out that I’m referring strictly to the version from Batman: The Animated Series, though I’m partial to pretty much any version of her. Hell, even the one from the Batman & Robin movie, despite the sheer amounts of cheese involved. But anyway, what can I say about Poison Ivy? Well, for starters, HUMINA HUMINA HUMINA! That said, do not sleep with this woman, it will NEVER stop itching. Once a brilliant botanist, Pamela Isley turned to a life of crime and became one of Batman’s greatest enemies. And considering she can grow massive man-eating plant monsters, it’s not all that hard to understand why. She also occasionally formed a tag team with Harley Quinn, a major fan favourite who got her start in that show. Though personally, Ivy just edges out over her in my opinion.

#4 – Arukenimon from Digimon

Yeah okay, I just wanted a villainess from Digimon, and…well, Arukenimon is the one that got the most screen time. Okay, I think maybe Lilithmon might’ve gotten as much in Xros Wars, but I haven’t seen much of that, so I can’t count it. I will give Arukenimon this much: She was cunning (for the most part) and had the power to turn Control Spires into evil Digimon with no hearts with just a single one of her hairs for each Spire used. In addition, SHE CREATED BLACKWARGREYMON. However, the truth is she really wasn’t all THAT great a villainess. Now who could’ve been much better if they’d gotten the same amount of screen time? LadyDevimon, of course. I mean she was evil to the core, tried to murder helpless civilians, and best of all, regularly got into cat fights with Angewomon. Now who wouldn’t love to have someone like that as a regular antagonist on a children’s show?!…Wait…

Now, I know what you’re thinking: Is that really the best you can do when it comes to animated villainesses? Well, no. No it isn’t.  Because this last one trumps them all in my opinion…

#5 – Reika Kitami from Bible Black

The victim of a horrific incident as a teenager that led to the creation of arguably the most evil woman walking the Earth, Reika Kitami is LITERALLY a servant to Satan and is imbued with his dark powers, twisting her mind into a sadist, a masochist, and just completely insane in her every goal. I don’t know if there exists someone worse…and honestly, if there is, I don’t think I wanna know. But most horrifying of all is that she has the ability to draw you in, wrap you around her finger, and once she’s got you, not only will she never let go, but a part of you won’t want her to. Now I can’t officially recommend people check this series out, and I won’t be adding links to it. Why? Well, with good reason: It’s pornography, and honestly, it can be morally sick. But because it’s still animated, there is no reason to leave her out of this list, and frankly every reason to include her, as she is quite simply the most evil of all animated villainesses.
