Doctor Who: 8 things we’d like to see in the new series

With only a couple of months to go until the new series of Doctor Who, everyone’s busy speculating about what delights – or horrors – might lurk within Peter Capaldi’s first few episodes in the TARDIS. Here’s one bucket list out of several million.
1. A capable, strong male companion
Doctor Who these days is all about strong, empowered women. Gone are the days of the timid Victoria or the screeching Mel – since the revival the Doctor’s female sidekicks are far more likely to get him out of trouble than they are to land him in it.
The same couldn’t be said for the male companions, who are usually either ineffectual comic relief (Mickey Smith) or gimmicky doe-eyed plot devices (Rory Williams, who, when he wasn’t dying, gave Amy an excuse to leave the Doctor).
